Brentford chief executive Mark Devlin insisted that it is ‘business as usual’ at Griffin Park, despite fan pressure on head coach Dean Smith growing.

The Bees have lost four games on the spin and were thumped 5-0 by Norwich on Saturday – their worst result in a league game since 2007 where they were beaten 7-0 by Peterborough.

And Devlin has backed Smith and the squad to turn things around sooner rather than later.

He said: “I don’t want to go around saying dreaded vote of support. As far as we’re concerned, it’s business as usual.

“The manager and the players hurt just as bad after Saturday. I’ve every faith in the players, squad and manager that they’ll put it right.

Under pressure: Dean Smith

“Form can turn around really quickly and then we had a fantastic end to the season. Good players can become bad overnight. They do lose form, confidence and belief and they’re working hard to get that back.”

Devlin knows it has been difficult since Brentford’s excellent win at QPR in October but insisted the club is doing everything it can on and off the pitch to lift the mood of the supporters.

And the chief executive asked the fans to stick with the squad and make Griffin Park an intimidating place to come.

He said: “We know the past few results have not been what everyone wanted or expected since the fantastic result at Loftus Road.

“We need fans to deal with the disappointment but not lose faith in the squad and the management. We all have bad periods of time and we’re going through one of those at the moment. Now’s the time to hide that and support the players.

“The club is doing everything we can to create extra demand and interest. We just need fans to keep the faith. They’ve been fantastic this year. We’re just looking for that continued loyalty that is important to the players.

“It’s easy to turn your back and wait for performances to turn around. It’s tougher to turn up with a bit of trepidation. My biggest plea is to turn up the volume at Griffin Park and make it loud – that will help the players.”

Brentford have reduced the prices for Saturday’s contest with Burton (£20 adult, £15 seniors, £5 young adult and £1 for a child) and Devlin hopes to see as many Bees fans there as possible.

He explained: “There are special prices for Saturday. The prices are fantastic and aimed as getting as many people into the ground at an expensive time of the year. If we can see as many Bees fans as we can it’s going to help.”
