Scott Hogan insists that head coach Dean Smith still has the backing of the entire Brentford squad.

The Bees have had a horrible set of results in recent weeks with the 5-0 loss at Norwich last Saturday the worst of them.

Fans have been questioning Smith, and some have accused him of losing the dressing room in light of the performance at Carrow Road.

But Hogan maintains nothing could be further from the truth and the squad are still backing their head coach to turn things around.

Under fire: Dean Smith

He said: “That’s people trying to make things up. We’ve let the manager down and the club down. We’re the ones who go out there.

"The manager can set us up in the way he wants and if we don’t carry it out. One bit of what he said we didn’t do right. He’d created a blueprint for us and if we’d executed the plan we could have won.

“To say we’re not playing for the manager is incredible. It’s incredible because it’s incredibly stupid. For anyone to question what the manager or what we’re doing for the manager is stupid. We believe he’s the best person to take us towards the Premier League.”

Hogan spoke out as the squad held their own inquest into what went wrong on Saturday moments after the final whistle.

He explained: “A lot of home truths were said on Saturday. A few people voiced their opinion and I said my opinion. We were off on Sunday so had time to reflect.

"We came in to watch the video analysis on Monday morning. I looked at the floor as I didn’t want to see it again. There was a lack of quality, experience, knowing what to do. We were lacking in every area and it’s had its effect

"I’ve never been embarrassed like that on a football pitch before. Pritch played really well on the day. It’d be nice to still have him here. It’s not been great but it’s not the end of the world.

“There’s still 30-odd games or so to go. We’re not panicking and it’s not a great situation to be in at the minute but we’ll get out of it starting Saturday.”

Hogan and the squad have shouldered the blame for the defeat and heaped praise on Smith for the way he turned up at Jersey Road on Monday morning.

The striker revealed: “He said it wasn’t good enough and not what he’s taught us. It’s not what he sets up to do. It’s entirely on us what’s happened.

"He sets us up in a way that he thinks he’s going to win the game and we didn’t do it. We have a lot of respect for the gaffer. I have full admiration of his ability to turn up on Monday as if nothing has happened. That’s one of his best skills.

"We let him down and we let the club down. It’s on us to turn it around. We’re working to put it right. If we win our next two games we’ll probably be 10th. We’re far from worried. We’re having a bad run and it’ll end soon.”
