A three-day police stand-off with a Northolt resident came to an end after police forced their way into the house and detained a man.

Specialist officers from the Territorial Support Group (TSG) entered the house on Sunday night (October 23) after 80 people were evacuated when a man locked himself in his house .

London Fire Brigade and the ambulance services were also at the scene after it was reported the 46-year-old was suffering from a mental health illness and had "petrol and combustible material" inside the property .

He has been arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis, affray and offences under the explosives act and taken to a west London police station.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "A search has taken place of the address to check the area is safe to allow local residents to start to return home.

"Police cordons have been removed. Work is still ongoing at the address as police are still examining the crime scene, which will take some time."

They added: "Police would like to reiterate their thanks to the local community for their support throughout the operation.

"There was a huge amount of disruption to local residents, we are grateful for their co-operation and we ask for their continued patience as we finish the work at the scene."

The operation alarmed residents in Northolt after a 200-metre radius around the house was cordoned off and 80 nearby residents temporarily re-homed due to safety reasons.

Northolt Leisure Centre car park was also blocked off as part of the Ealing Met's operation in Eastcote Lane North.

Leader of Ealing Council, Julian Bell, said: "I'm pleased and relieved that the police have been able to bring the incident in Northolt to a peaceful and safe conclusion.

"I would like to thank Northolt residents for their patience throughout this difficult time.

"I hope the area can be returned to normal as quickly as possible so that people can return home and get back to their usual routines.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those officers, from all the emergency services and the council, who have worked around the clock throughout the weekend dealing with this incident."
