New drop-in sessions and an admissions fair is being held for parents looking to get their child into their preferred primary schools next year.

Parents may need advice on changes to rules for allocation at community primary schools, which came into force last year.

Priority is now given to children with siblings already at the school after some families were previously unable to find a spot at the same school as older brothers and sisters.

Schools also no longer have catchment areas, but instead applications are measured in a straight-line distance from the school.

This change was made because some families could not get a spot at their closest school because of the catchment boundary.

Advice has been offered to help parents with the primary school admissions process

Criterion of exceptional medical and social circumstances have also been removed but this will not affect children with special educational needs statements or education, health and care plans.

Instead, appeal panels will consider the medical and social needs as part of their process.

The deadline for primary school applications is Sunday January 15 next year for children starting in September 2017.

An admissions fair will be held on Tuesday December 6 at Ealing Town Hall from 4pm to 8pm.

There is no need to book for the event and you can drop in at any time to talk to Ealing Council's admissions experts.

Ealing Council is also offering individual advice sessions with admissions officers which need to be booked.

The individual sessions will be held a Perceval House, next to Ealing Town Hall, on December 7, 8, and 9 from 10am to 4pm.

People wishing to attend must book in advance by calling 02088255522 or by emailing mainroundadmissions@ealing.gov.uk .

'Our team of experts will be ready'

Councillor Binda Rai, who is cabinet member for children and young people at the council, said: “Our team of experts will be ready and waiting to help parents and carers applying for primary school to avoid common errors such as returning the forms later, only applying for one school or making unrealistic choices.”

Ealing Council said all children who applied on time last year were offered a place at a school in the borough, and 95% were offered a place at one of their top three choices.
