A young Greenford woman ‘adored by everyone’ who died on New Year’s Day had taken MDMA, an inquest heard.

Charnelle Williams, 23, was hit by a train in the early hours of January 1 this year after falling onto the tracks at East Acton station.

An inquest at West London Coroners Court on Thursday (November 8) heard Charnelle had become “disorientated” while by herself on the platform and was “not familiar” with the Tube.

She was on the track for four minutes before a train struck her.

What happened?

According to the coroner’s report, signed by assistant coroner Anton van Dellen, Charnelle, a warehouse operator, was travelling alone and got on the wrong train at Shepherd’s Bush station.

Staff at Shepherd’s Bush called ahead to East Acton, giving a detailed description of Charnelle after she was “recognised as being vulnerable”.

She got off two stops later at East Acton at 2.58am and after two minutes she had fallen onto the tracks.

Four minutes later, a train came and struck Charnelle.

The inquest report states: “She had become separated and was travelling alone. She was not familiar with the Tube network. She had ingested MDMA.

“She was recognised as being vulnerable. She boarded an incorrect train at Shepherd’s Bush station.

“A telephone call was made to East Acton station from Shepherd’s Bush station with a detailed description of her but [no] further information about intoxication and the involvement of BTP.

“She alighted at East Acton station at 2.58am. At 3am, whilst disorientated, she accidentally fell on to the track where she was struck at 3.04am by a train. She died as a result of multiple injuries.”

Her death was recorded by the coroner as an 'accident contributed to by neglect'.

The girl with an ‘infectious smile’

People who knew “popular” Charnelle, nicknamed Weez, described how she had an "infectious" smile.

One friend, Cas, told us: "She touched so many people's hearts, she was such a kind, caring person.

"Her smile was contagious, she would liven up any setting. She was loved by so many and her memory will always live on.

"Her soul was too beautiful for this ugly place."

Jane Wheatley, who lived in Southall, knew Charnelle since she was a child and was devastated to hear she had died.

She said: "It's absolutely tragic the way it happened. As soon as I heard literally my eyes just filled up.

"I still can't believe it, knowing that I saw her only last week [before she died]. I loved her to pieces.

"My children and her grew up together, I only saw Charnelle last week for the first time in a long time.

"She was only 23, she was always bubbly. Her smile was very infectious and she was adored by everyone, very popular.

"My son, Clark, always played with her when they were younger.

"My daughter also spoke to Charnelle quite a lot, she found her very easy to talk to and opened up to her a lot."

Raising money

A JustGiving Page set up after Charnelle's death, to help with funeral costs, raised hundreds of pounds in less than 24 hours.

In the end it smashed its target of £2,000 and collected £3,205.

"Charnelle was killed on New Year's Day. Charnelle was such a good friend to all of us and would always be there for any of us.

"She was loved by all. I just want us to be able to help her family at this very sad time."
