Neal Ardley is still looking to bring in another striker before the closure of the January transfer window after completing the signing of David Connolly.

Connolly had his contract cancelled at Portsmouth by mutual consent this week and has decided to link up with his former team-mate at Kingsmeadow.

The 37-year-old veteran forward joined Wimbledon in 2001 and scored 42 times while playing alongside the current Dons boss.

Reinforcements: AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley

Ardley is short of firepower following the loss of Matt Tubbs, who has gone in the other direction to Fratton Park, and sees Connolly as one half of a new front two.

“David is a very good player who is still as sharp as ever,” Ardley told Dons Player. “We have looked at various options after Matt Tubbs left and we've decided to bring in two forwards rather than one.

“David is one of those and he trained with us this morning. It was one of the best training sessions I had seen in a long time and he was exceptional. He looks after himself and he is still in great shape.

Gone: Matt Tubbs has joined Portsmouth

“We lost an exceptional striker with Matt Tubbs leaving, but David is an out-and-out goalscorer. He is certainly one of the best I played with back in my time with Wimbledon.

“We just need to get him up to speed so that when when we do start to use him more he will be ready for that. That will happen in the next couple of weeks, but he will certainly be straight into the squad for Saturday and he will give everyone a boost.”

Connolly started his career at Watford and has amassed 41 Republic of Ireland caps in a successful career at the likes of West Ham, Leicester and Southampton.
