QPR lost out on target David Nugent who went to Derby - while Arouna Kone’s £40k-a-week wages at Everton are a stumbling block.

As Hoops scout around for another frontman to fill the void left by the departed Sebastian Polter, we asked fans who they thought would make a good Rs fit.

Choice: Lee Gregory (L)

Number One choice

He with the most votes was Lee Gregory at Millwall - most notably because QPR boss Ian Holloway had the forward under his wing when both were at The Den.

Forty four appearances last season and 20 goals, and 10 in 25 so far is the 28-year-old’s haul.

The downside is he has a contract set to run until 2018, so will cost Hoops a lot more than the £250,00 Millwall paid Halifax for him in 2014.

Contract clause: Matty Taylor (L)

Gas fired

Matty Taylor has hit even more than Gregory for Bristol Rovers in League One this season - 18 goals in 31 appearances.

At 26 time is also more on his side, but he said this in the summer before signing a new deal with the Pirates.

“I did have offers from a number of Championship and League One clubs and, to be honest, it’s been difficult to arrive at a final decision,” he said.

“If, at some point down the line, a club comes in for me then they will have to pay Bristol Rovers a fee and I can leave by the front door, with my head held high.”

The trigger fee is understood to be around £1m, but there are four Championship clubs and the other Rangers of the Glasgow variety apparently interested as well.

Net gain: Charlie Wyke (C)

Out of left field

Charlie Wyke at Carlisle United is even younger, and has a similar scoring record to Taylor’s 17 goals in 32 appearances.

OK, so it’s a division lower. But Wyke at 24 has time to develop even if he does have a contract with the Cumbrians until 2018.

GetWestLondon readers are clearly aware of hotshots in the lower divisions.

Warning - and it’s called Conor Washington

Lest ye forget, the former Peterborough striker cost Rs close to £2m from Peterborough nearly a year ago.

It’s as painful to Ollie as it is Rs supporters, the Northern Ireland international has scored a mere two Championship goals in 34 appearances since then, as he clearly suffered from the step up.
