Nedum Onuoha has been handed a vote of confidence by his QPR boss - despite the fact Rs share the Championship’s worst goals record with Bristol City.

The defender and new skipper is much better in the second tier than with his back to wall fighting a lost cause in the Premier League last season, Chris Ramsey insists.

The head coach explained the man with a new contract that keeps him at Rangers until 2017 has rediscovered his mojo, even though Rs have shipped 20 Championship goals in 11 games - nearly two a match.

Ramsey added: “Nedum’s confidence on the ball has been a lot better than last year when everybody was on tenterhooks.”

Onuoha wasn’t even sure he would be around for a second tilt at the Championship when he half joked about his future in May.

He said his fate was in the hands of a club hell-bent on releasing 16 players as soon as possible, and could end up in the ‘Turkish Super League, fifth division.’

But after a proposed move to Norwich broke down at the tail end of the transfer window, he pledged his future to the club he joined in 2012 from Manchester City.

“It’s a real honour and a privilege to be made captain. Was it a surprise? Yes it was,” he added.

“I think it was Pele that said that he never wanted to be captain, but he wanted to be a leader on the pitch. I’ve always tried to be that person.”

Rangers resume Championship action away to Birmingham City on Saturday.
