If Tim Sherwood was watching Brentford's display at Aston Villa the vindictive part of him would be raising a smile at Rico Henry's performance.

The former Villans boss would have signed the full back on the spot after a display for Walsall but the Lions' hierarchy were uninterested at the time.

If any of Randy Lerner's cohorts were watching Saturday's fixture in the Championship they may well have regretted not listening to 'Tactics Tim' as well.

“Because clubs are not sending scouts out as much to these lower leagues,” Sherwood told the Telegraph in 2015 when discussing recruitment.

“Years ago they found Ian Wright, Les Ferdinand and Stuart Pearce in non-league. You hear people say now they will never be found again.

“(Jamie) Vardy is proving they can. In the Football League, Callum Wilson has proved they can. John Stones has proved they can.

“A lot of clubs are just not looking because it is not sexy to sign a player from the lower leagues or non-league.”

Henry was superb for the Bees and didn't give Robert Snodgrass a sniff when he was brought on to try and give the home side a win they scarcely deserved.

The 20-year-old ran himself into the ground before he was withdrawn suffering with cramp towards the end of the contest.

Interestingly enough, Villa fans were most impressed with Henry and his team-mate Ryan Woods.

Both of them are from the west Midlands and the Villans were kicking themselves about letting the 'Ginger Pirlo' through their fingers last year.

Indeed, Woods did have a trial at Aston Villa, as revealed to GetWestLondon last year.

He said: “I actually did have a trial there (at Aston Villa) as a kid and I didn't enjoy it so that's when I went to Walsall and then Shrewsbury after that.

“I think it's best you start at lower clubs and you work your way up because you get your chances and this is where I am today.

“I'm doing myself justice on the pitch. I'm trying to get better and people will see that through the season.”

The expectation is they will be doing so again regarding the full back with Villa's loss once again Brentford's gain.
