Stuart Gray admitted a watching Slavisa Jokanovic might have had something to do with a terrific 4-1 win over Rotherham.
The new head coach was a spectator in the stands, while the man he replaces was on the touchline, but it seems the Serb who got Watford promoted last season had an instant impact.
That said, Gray insisted that for once in nine games the luck was all White.
He added: "You get satisfaction from the result, but as a coach you get satisfaction from the performance. We played quickly; we played forward, and the goals we scored were fantastic.
"But our Achilles heel is from set pieces - and we conceded yet again. I wouldn't say we lacked confidence; we lacked self belief. Our problem is getting the first goal and once we got that it made a difference."
Jokanovic will be the seventh man to look after the first team in two years, counting caretakers, and he has already made his presence felt in the changing room.
"He came in and introduced himself and I had two minutes with him, and we'll sit down tomorrow and talk as well," Gray explained.
"Any new manager in the stands is going to have an effect, but the harder you work the luckier you get.
"I'm sure I'll learn from him and him from me. He got Watford promoted, and I'll pass on what I know about the Championship."
Double goalscorer Cauley Woodrow only got a start because Moussa Dembele pulled up lame in training yesterday with a hamstring problem. It proved a silver lining for the troubled Whites.
"It's only a minor thing and he (Dembele) just felt it tighten in training yesterday," Gray said.
"One man's loss is another man's gain, and Cauley Woodrow came in and did excellently and took his two goals really well."
