Jake Bidwell admits it's difficult knowing he won't play under Mark Warburton again – but is already ready for the next chapter in his Brentford career.

With Kevin O'Connor all but retired and Richard Lee having hung his gloves up, Bidwell is now one of Brentford's longest-serving players, behind just Toumani Diagouraga and Jonathan Douglas, and alongside Harlee Dean.

Since initially joining on loan in November 2011, and permanently 18 months later, the former Everton left-back has made more than 100 appearances for the Bees and worn the captain's armband on a couple of occasions – at the age of just 22.

A step too far: Bidwell and Brentford lost to Middlesbrough in the play-offs

Throughout it all, Warburton has been there – first in the background as sporting director and then as manager, while Bidwell has been an almost ever-present during Warburton's time in the hot seat.

That came to an end with Brentford's Championship play-off defeat to Middlesbrough, calling time on Warburton's reign, and while Bidwell found it hard to say goodbye, he is also ready to look to the future.

He said: “It was an emotional day for us knowing it would be the gaffer's last game in charge if we didn't get to Wembley, and it can take a lot out of you mentally.

Saying goodbye: Brentford manager Mark Warburton

“Nobody can say they weren't effected as we are all grateful to him. It's been a great two seasons under Mark and we all owe him for bringing our games on.

“However, we can't use that as an excuse for not winning. It's been a good season but we're just disappointed we couldn't get the job done in the end.

“All the lads are grateful for the work Mark has done with us, so it's a shame he's going. But it's another chapter now, and we'll come back after a rest ready for whatever new challenges lay ahead.”
