Mark Warburton didn't give his Brentford players a leaving speech after their play-off defeat to Middlesbrough but will be saying goodbye to his squad today after the Bees' season came to an end.

The manager is leaving the club after he decided he didn't want to work under Matthew Benham's new structure.

Following the 3-0 loss to Boro, making it 5-1 on aggregate, Warburton didn't have a speech for the players but will, instead see them later to say goodbye.

He said: “I didn't have a speech for the players (after the final whistle). We will see them today.

“David and I are here until May 30 and it's about doing our job. We'll see the players today and the staff over the next seven to 10 days.”

Warburton also paid tribute to the Bees fans who sang their hearts out until the final whistle and the players and management went to thank them after Middlesbrough fans had cleared the pitch.

He added: “We didn't want to crash Boro's party after the final whistle, but it was really important the players, who were so low, and staff came out and went off to the fans to thank them who have been magnificent.”

Warburton admitted his side were second best over the two legs and gave credit to Middlesbrough for the way they played.

He said: "The players are very disappointed but all credit to them. Over 46 games they deserve to be there.

"We were second best. Middlesbrough were the better team on the night and they deserve to go through.

"They are a very strong squad, with talented players. They are well organised unit wise and team wise. They are strong. You look around 33,000, 34,000 they are a big club. The better team deserved to go through."

"There is no criticism of the players, but they will be the first to say we were not good enough in the first half. They imposed their game on us more than we imposed ours on theirs."
