Manchester City have indicated they have no interest in signing Didier Drogba, clearing the way for the striker to make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho opened discussions with his old pal last week over a one-year contract, with a view to extending his stay beyond that period in a coaching capacity.

A report in today’s Daily Star claimed that City were going to rival the Blues with an 11th-hour bid to snatch the Ivory Coast international.

Return? Didier Drogba could be heading back to Stamford Bridge

But sources close to the Premier League champions have insisted there is no foundation in the rumours despite the club losing Alvaro Negredo to injury for the big kick-off.

Drogba is free agent following the expiry of his Galatasaray contract this summer and reports in France claim the move will be sealed later this week.
