Didier Drogba’s return to Chelsea could be confirmed as early as this week.

The Blues opened discussions with their former hero last week and negotiations are understood have gone smoothly.

Drogba, who wrote his name into Chelsea history by scoring the penalty to secure their first Champions League in 2012, will be offered a one-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

At the age of 36, the Ivorian is seen as an experienced head to offer guidance in the dressing room following the recent departures of English duo Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

Jose Mourinho is also keen for Drogba to take up a coaching role with the club, although that development may have to wait a year until the veteran hangs up his boots for good.
