Plans for a new railway that would let Londoners travel from west to north without having to go through central are gathering momentum.

The West London Economic Prosperity Board (WLEPB) commissioned a report showing the railway to be "excellent value for money" in September and put the idea to the Mayor's office.

On Tuesday (November 21) the board, which is made up of councillors from Brent, Barnet, Ealing, Hounslow, Harrow and Hammersmith and Fulham, met to discuss the project's next steps.

The West London Orbital Railway would consist of two new lines, one running from West Hampstead to Hounslow and another running from Hendon to Isleworth via Brent Cross.

The WLEPB is currently in talks with TfL over the project and has submitted its application to the Mayor's office.

The West London Orbital Railway would see the recommissioning of the current Dudding Hill line for passenger use

Luke Ward, spokesman for the West London Orbital railway, said: "The important thing in the next months is not to lose momentum.

“Whatever happens there’s a scheme there to be realised and something that can be delivered.

“We’re keeping up talks with TfL and although it’s too early to say, it seems to be going positively.

The new line will link regeneration sites at Wembley, Park Royal and Brent Cross.

“We are trying to convince the GLA and TfL that West London Orbital fits with the Mayor's London plan.

“We hope to have an answer in the next few months but it’s up to the GLA when that happens - it might not be until March.”

He added: “The West London Orbital Railway would benefit Park Royal and allow Londoners to travel from Hounslow to Canary Wharf without having to go into central London.

The West London Orbital Railway would see the recommissioning of the current Dudding Hill line, used for freight trains, for passenger use.

The first part of the Dudding Hill line would run north from Old Oak Common, part of The Mayor of London's developer's Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation's (OPDC) regeneration site.

When asked about the West London Orbital Railway plans, OPDC CEO Victoria Hills said: "We're supportive of anything that's good for connectivity but we need to understand what the impact of a it would be on development.

"If it all works in harmony then we think it's a wonderful thing."
