MP Mary Macleod has urged Transport for London (TfL) not to turn commuters away from Gunnersbury station during peak periods.

The MP for Brentford and Isleworth condemned a move by the transport officials asking local residents not to use the station during the morning and evening peak hours.

Ms Macleod, who spearheaded a campaign for the station's redevelopment and established the Gunnersbury Station Action Team in 2013, was shocked to find out TfL had sent an email round to local residents last week advising them to avoid using the station due to overcrowding.

Ms Macleod said: “The action team has been making great progress at Gunnersbury Station so far.

"TfL has agreed to relocate the maps and signage so that there is more room for passengers on the platform and they have come up with a system to ensure that traffic flows better on the stairs.

“However, advising passengers not to use the station during peak hours is unacceptable.

"Gunnersbury has become a transport hub for west London in recent years and whilst it’s great to see so many businesses being attracted to the area, local residents should not have to suffer.

"We need to find a long term solution to radically redevelop Gunnersbury Station – and that’s what the Action Team is committed to doing.”

In recent months, the action team has welcomed much needed progress at Gunnersbury station with the commitment from Hounslow Council of £637,508 of section 106 money to be spent on improvements following repeated calls from Ms Macleod and local residents.

Just last year, in October, under an agreement between Network Rail and Transport for London (TfL), there were plans in place to deal with overcrowding at the station.

However, despite support from TfL for changing the station for the better, the recent move has concerned Ms Macleod.

Tfl have been contacted for a comment.
