Three people have been injured and one person is critical after a fire at a mental health unit at Hillingdon Hospital.

Emergency services attended the Riverside Centre at Hillingdon Hospital on Monday (April 3) and Hillingdon Police confirmed that a fire had broken out.

According to police, three people were injured and one person was in a critical condition.

The Riverside Centre in Pield Heath Road cares for people with serious mental health illnesses.

Patients at the ward must have acute mental health issue

The criteria for patients are the Riverside Centre:

  • Are over the age of 18.
  • Are suffering an acute phase of a serious mental illness, suspected to have an acute mental illness, or a relapse of long term mental illnesses that, due to the level of identified risks to self or others, cannot be safely assessed and treated anywhere but in an inpatient mental health ward.
  • Have been detained under the Mental Health Act (including Community Treatment Order (CTO) recalls)
  • Are vulnerable, at risk of harm to self or others as a result of an acute phase of a serious mental illness and cannot be safely supported in a community setting despite increased level of support, care and treatment.
  • Have a dual diagnosis of learning disability, substance misuse etc. however the primary reason for inpatient care is an acute phase of a serious mental illness.

The Riverside Centre

The Riverside Centre, in Hillingdon, has two adult inpatient wards, Frays Ward and Crane Ward, that provide a safe and therapeutic environment for people with acute mental health problems, according to its website.

12 patients to be moved

12 patients at the Riverside Centre will be moved because of smoke damaged caused to the ward by the fire.

It is expected to be fully operational within 24 to 48 hours.

First floor bedroom damaged

A statement from London Fire Brigade said: “We were called at 9.25am and the incident was over for us at 11.36am.

“The first floor bedroom in the hospital was 10% damaged by fire.

“One adult was rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus.”

The trust are contacting families of all patients and anyone with concerns can call the Riverside Centre on 01895 891000.

Two staff injured

No other patients were injured during the incident and two staff suffered minor injuries but are now back on duty.

The statement from the trust said smoke damage has been caused to the corridor outside the room and is expected to clear within 24 to 48 hours.

A full assessment is under way and 12 patients will be moved to other wards temporarily.

'A fire on Frays Ward'

A statement from Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the mental health unit, said: “This morning there was a fire on Frays Ward at the Riverside Mental Health Unit in Hillingdon.

“The fire brigade and police were on the scene quickly and the incident is over.”

Fire broke out in a patients room

The trust that runs the Riverside Centre have confirmed that a fire started in a patients room on Monday morning.

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust said the patient was in intensive care at Hillingdon Hospital receiving treatment for smoke inhalation.

Fire broke out in a first floor bedroom on Monday morning

A fire broke out in the first floor bedroom of the Riverside Centre mental health unit, according to London Fire Brigade.

The fire service were called at 9.25am today and said the incident was over for them at 11.36am.

A spokesperson said: “A first floor bedroom in the hospital was 10% damaged by fire.

“One adult was rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus.”

London Ambulance Service were also on the scene.
