A family from Ealing have been left “fearful of going outside” after four people burgled their home and threatened a father-of-three with a screwdriver.

At around 9.25pm on Saturday October 28, officers from Metropolitan Police received reports of a burglary taking place in Almond Avenue, Ealing.

Before officers arrived, four suspects wearing balaclavas fled on foot after stealing around £20,000 worth of gold jewellery, personal possessions and money.

Speaking to getwestlondon, Bayan Karim said her entire family are now scared to leave their home.

“My husband was at home in the living room when four thugs somehow opened a door with a screwdriver, all wearing balaclavas and gloves,” Mrs Karim said.

“They threatened my husband not to move and asked where the money and gold were, one of them continuously kept the screwdriver over my husband - telling him if he moved, he would be hurt.

“It was a very long 10 minutes, they turned the whole place upside down.”

At the time of the burglary, the mother-of-three was preparing for a major operation and had kept money at home for emergencies for the rest of the family.

Gold jewellery collected for 25 years was also stolen from their home, along with four pairs of trainers belonging to Mrs Karim's son.

She continued: “What's even more upsetting is that this group tried to break in the evening before, but we went to find out what the noises were and scared them off.

“We called the police regarding the attempted break-in but they didn't bother coming over to the house at all – had they come to our aid, maybe we would not have lost so much.

“We are all fearful of going outside, even for a short period of time. We are all jumpy and can't understand why this has happened.

“We are hard-working people and feel betrayed by the system, we can't understand why the police don't seem to put any efforts in – even to speak to our neighbours to see if they know something.”

The Ealing resident recalled how she had been to Acton police station three times since and has had a number of emails ignored by officers in charge of her case.

Suggesting her family have been subjected to a “lack of monitoring and communication”, Mr Karim added: “I know that the police force has made cuts in their funding.

“But the trauma my family has had to face in recent times is in line with the numerous robberies along my road and the police to date have failed to sufficiently monitor the area.”
