The family of an American killed in the Westminster terror attack last week have branded their ordeal "awful, horrible and gut wrenching".

Kurt Cochran died in Wednesday's terror attack near the Houses of Parliament, on the last day of his first trip abroad to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Melissa.

The 54 year-old musician from Salt Lake City, Utah, was described as "an amazing individual who loved everyone and tried to make the world a better place".

His wife is in hospital and receiving treatment for her injuries, which included a cut to her hand, a broken rib and injuries to her leg.

Melissa's brother, Clint Payne, read a statement from her family where they described their experience as "tender".

"Our family is so grateful for the first responders, the medical personnel, the assistance of government agencies in the United States and Great Britain along with the generosity Clint said.

Kurt Cochran was killed on the final day of his first trip abroad, to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife, Melissa.

"So many people have been so kind, and we are deeply touched by their goodness and generosity.

"Your notes, prayers, donations and love have helped us so much."

The family said they were saddened by the loss but grateful people around the world were coming to know him and be inspired by him.

"He was an amazing individual who loved everyone and tried to make the world a better place," the statement said.

"He left a legacy of generosity and service that continues to inspire us."

Melissa's father, who was working in London as a missionary for the Church of Latter Day Saints, said learnt of his loved one's involvement in the attacks through pictures broadcast around the world.

"My daughter-in-law Sharon recognised Melissa in pictures, and we got online and realised our loved ones were involved," he said.

Police have made twelve arrests in relation to the attack, with nine people being released without further action.

They have also carried out raids at 15 addresses, including three in London and eight in Birmingham.

Two men from Birmingham, aged 58 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, and remain in police custody.

A 32 year-old woman from Manchester was also arrested on the same charge and has been released on bail until late March.
