Gallery: Gardener manages to grow tropical bananas in West London home after eight years

Banana trees are finally bearing fruit after seven years of failed attempts.

Ron Rodrigues was jumping for joy on Friday, after seeing 35 of his plants producing bananas, but not in the tropics where they typically thrive, but right here, in Harrow .

The 55-year-old, of Vista Way, Kenton, said: “I couldn’t believe it. It all started years ago when I purchased them online. They were two inches tall and cost me £5 each, and now, they’re growing bananas in Harrow.”

Last year, getwestlondon featured Miriam Agard, also of Kenton, who managed to grow bananas after many years.

The property developer added: “It has taken a lot of hard work, summer after summer they did not produce, but here we are.”
