A costume band got everybody into the spirit this weekend showing the countdown to Notting Hill Carnival has truly begun.

Funatik Mas have been performing at Carnival since 2012 but needed some sponsorship to continue this year so were delighted when Tesco Metro in Notting Hill Gate and Portobello agreed to support them.

Music and dance performances by the mas’ band got everyone in the party spirit on Saturday (August 9) at the two stores.

Martin Jay, from Funatik Mas, said: “To have the support of a national brand such as Tesco is an absolute honour. Their support has been incredible and has enabled us to improve the standard of service to our band members greatly”.

Customers were treated to some Caribbean food, from spicy chicken and rice to some cool lassi yoghurt smoothies.

The band also announced the winner of a carnival poster design competition held in local primary schools with Tesco.

Salma, 6, will take part in Children’s Day on August 24 with her sister, complete with costumes and Salma’s winning poster designer printed onto limited edition hessian bags which will be given away to customers and Carnival spectators.

The bags will also be given away to the 200 Carnival volunteers with various Caribbean drinks, marinades and spices from Tesco to say thank you for their support.

Notting Hill Tesco store manager, Mo Subair, added: “We are delighted to sponsor Funatik Mas for the 2014 carnival. Being involved in the Carnival is a great way for Tesco to support the local community it serves whilst getting colleagues and customers into the carnival spirit!”
