A Hillingdon couple in their 90s are encouraging elderly people to stay active and sociable – by running dance classes in West Drayton.

Former Olympic cyclist Don McKellow and his wife Beryl retired nearly 30 years ago but are still fighting fit thanks to the regular exercise they get from dancing.

The couple hold tea dances at Yiewsley and West Drayton Community Centre and are now keen for new aspiring dancers to join their gang.

Don McKellow says dancing has helped keep him socialising

Mr McKellow, 92, said: “At our age it's important to stay fit both actively and mentally.

“The social side of dancing keeps us young and we've made so many friends from it.

“We are a small group but we know that West Drayton and the local area have lots of men and women who sit at home isolated, but still have the ability to dance or just want to enjoy the social side and music.”

Don and his wife Beryl are on the hunt for new members

Mr McKellow, who was born in 1925, competed in the Helskini Olympics in Finland 65 years ago.

Taking part in the 1,000 metre cycling track event, he placed 5th.

He is not the borough's only claim to sporting fame - Paralympic star Natasha Baker from Uxbridge won three gold medals at the Rio Olympics last year.
