A modern-day twist of Shakespeare's most famous love story, showing on stage at the Tabard Theatre, has been nominated for two Offies awards.

The Chapel Lane Theatre Company's latest play - titled Shakespeare's R&J - is in the running for Off West End Theatre Awards (Offies) for best director and best lighting designer.

Made up of four cast members who play at least 12 characters between them, this Romeo and Juliet production comes with an unexpected twist and has taken a shine with audiences inChiswick and surrounding areas.

Thom Harvey-Ball, Chapel Lane Theatre’s joint artistic director, said the Tabard Theatre was the perfect setting and location for the play, adding: "It's been amazing to have so many people come up to me after the final curtain and tell me how they've been touched or moved by the play.

"We've been asked if the show will tour nationally, which is a fantastic idea.

"It's been a pleasure working in this community and getting to know local people.

“Being nominated for these two Offies has made us even more keen to welcome more audiences to the Tabard to enjoy our play before it ends."

The play is set in a repressive British boarding school and follows four young boys who by day go to their classes and by night secretly read a copy of Romeo and Juliet becoming immersed in the characters and themes of the play with the lines between acting and reality blurred.

The adaptation of Shakespeare's R&J will run until August 8 at the Tabard Theatre, Bath Road, Chiswick.
