Amazon is having a big summer sale, with discounts across a number of departments.

The sale, which will run for less than two days, will launch next month.

Amazon Prime Day was created in 2015, to celebrate the e-tailer's 20th birthday.

It proved to be a big hit with shoppers, so much so, that Amazon made it an annual event - one it claims rivals Black Friday

Unfortunately, it is only accessible to Amazon Prime members, but there's still time to sign up before the sale starts.

Here's everything you need to know:

When is Amazon Prime Day 2018?

The event will run for 36 hours starting from midday on July 16 and coming to an end at midnight the following day, July 17.

Amazon accidentally leaked the sale dates on its UK website last week.

Speaking about Prime Day 2017, Greg Greeley, Vice President of Amazon Prime, said: “Our members love Prime Day and we were thrilled by the response over the last two years. It is inspiring us to make it even better this year for Prime members."

Why is it a big deal?

It is the summer version of Black Friday, but only for Amazon Prime members.

The sale is a great way to pick up discounted items, without having to fight the hordes of crowds, like on Black Friday.

This year's event will last six hours longer than the one in 2017.

What discounts can I expect?

Shoppers can expect slashed prices across Amazon's own-brand products including the Echo, the Echo Dot, Kindles, Fire TV sticks and Fire Tablets.

As well as this, there's expected to be discounts on TVs and consoles.

Last year the Echo Dot was the most-bought sale item world-wide.
