London has arguably the best music scene around, with thousands of talented musicians emerging every day, most of which are unsigned acts waiting for their big break.

Unsigned Friday brings you the very best unsigned music artists from around the capital, as well as giving these acts a platform to promote their music.

This week, getwestlondon 's Emily Chudy caught up with London-based alt-folk artist The Mining Co.

The Mining Co. is the work of London-based musician Michael Gallagher, who writes alt-folk/Americana music with an Irish/European twist.

Gallagher said: "I'd describe my music as alternative atmospheric Low-Fi folk. I get my inspiration from past experiences, films, music, and whatever life throws at you.

"My favourite artists include Dylan, Springsteen, Doug Paisley, The Low Anthem, The Bowerbirds, The Everybodyfields, Daniel Lanois, Rock, Jazz, Trad, Metal, Punk... I first started playing when I was 15, formed a short-lived metal band."

The Mining Co. is just about to release its debut album, Burning Sun and The Atomic Powers Within, which is coming out on Friday March 11.

Gallagher said: "Most of the new album was rehearsed in Spain with friends from Andalucía who play in an art-rock alternative punk band. Originally we had keys and lots of distorted guitars but we settled for a 'less is more' vibe to it in the end.

"I love the ambiance that Daniel Lanois got for Dylan's Oh Mercy, and I always wanted to try and recreate that. 'Ballad of the Mining Company' I think is a good example of that.

"I'm excited for people to hear my record because there are some great melodies and songs on it."

On the future of the band, Gallagher said: "For the future? A label to help me get these songs heard, also, to write better songs and try out different sounds."

A reviewer of the album said: "Gallagher's songs breathe with their own poignant moods and stories through the palette of those influences, and there's both a fragile intimacy and richness in the production which gives these songs a wide-screen quality and yet allows them to speak straight to the heart."
