London has arguably the best music scene around, with thousands of talented musicians emerging every day, most of which are unsigned acts waiting for their big break.

Unsigned Friday brings you the very best unsigned music artists from around the capital, as well as giving these acts a platform to promote their music.

This week, getwestlondon 's Emily Chudy caught up with jazz/rock trio Mia and the Moon.

Mia and the Moon consist of sisters Laura and Mary-Anne Ratcliffe and brand new drummer Sam Winterton. The band formed in 2012 after the sisters - then a duo - walked away from The X-Factor, due to being asked by producers to fight on-camera.

The two sisters began singing together as toddlers at National Bluegrass Festivals alongside their musical parents, and despite differing careers (Mary-Anne released her own music, reaching the top ten dance chart in 2009, while Laura performed worldwide on-board Luxury Cruise Ships, yachts and hotels) have come together to hone a timeless musical style.

Mary-Anne said: "Our original music genre is as versatile as our covers repertoire, hopping between jazz and rocky tones while keeping timeless vintage songwriting at the core, and we often find musical fans covering our material, and others singing along to our tracks like Snow.

"As sisters, our influences differ. Laura's career started in the cruise industry favouring sultry jazz/cabaret artists such as Nina Simone and Tina Turner while I enjoyed fronting rock bands and writing for DJs before starting Mia and the Moon, and look up to the likes of Nirvana and The Kinks!

"We found common ground with Ed Sheeran, whose songwriting is so prolific he could headline a stadium gig on his own with a guitar, Eva Cassidy, whose cover arrangements spellbind the globe, and Leonard Cohen, whose lyrics will never be forgotten.

Since leaving The X-Factor and forming a band together, Mia and the Moon have released their debut album, Fall Awake, and toured the UK extensively.

Mary-Anne said: "Since its release, copies of Fall Awake have sold like hot cakes through our new website and whilst touring the UK from Manchester to Bristol!

"Fall Awake is a prime example of our independent ideals fusing together in an understated melting pot of smoky jazz, rock from the soul and classic vintage sibling harmony!

"We will also be releasing a live album soon, plus new T-shirts, handmade merch, and a special Valentine's Day treat for our YouTube subscribers!

"We hope our story inspires more unsigned acts to stay true to who they and work hard at what they do, as the world is changing, and it's not all about major labels and big breaks anymore... It's fans that make an artist successful!"

A reviewer for Acoustic Magazine, on the album Fall Awake, said: "Strong vocals underpinned by beautifully engineered instrumentation!"

Mia and the Moon's album Fall Awake is available to pre-order on Spotify from Monday February 29.
