A plethora of quirky lyrics and catchy instrumentals are packed into the work of the fourpiece band Missdavinalee.Vocalist Davina Cooke chats to PARNIYAN ZEMARYALAI about how she got started in music and the highs of following a career doing what she loves

WITH an easy laugh and a throaty tone vastly different to her punchy singing voice, Davina describes her band's distinctive sound as "indie electro-pop with lyrics that are sometimes naive and self conscious." And there is certainly is a sense of self awareness that is attached to each confident song.

Missdavinalee's track Bed Bugs was recently selected as track of the week on VSRecharged, an independent radio station. They have also attracted the attention of talent scouts on BBC6 and Toast on Fire, a radio station in Hamburg, Germany.

Davina recalls her inclination towards music forming at the age of 15 whilst she was a student at Whitmore High School in Porlock Avenue, West Harrow

"PE clashed with music classes and I would hang back in the halls," she says. Listening to the strains of floating melodies escaping from the music rooms, she ambitiously picked up the guitar and immediately fell into writing song lyrics.

Now at the age of 29, she giggles: "Both writing melodies and lyrics were done equally badly at that time, but I have improved now."

She sings about love, relationships and heartbreak. "It's all about boys really! The good and the bad.

"The songs are not directed to a specific audience and I want everyone to be able to relate to what I am writing."

Assisted by Roald Madlands playing base, Gareth Ashton on drums and Angus Wilson on the keyboard, Missdavinalee are constantly playing around the UK with a setlist influenced by a diverse range of artists from Nirvana and PJ Harvey to Fowl, an emerging band from Uxbridge.

Davina says: "Every gig is great, though I prefer smaller ones, they feel more intimate.

"Harrow has a great music scene with really talented people. The Trinity Bar is an excellent place to go to for that - those guys have a good ear."

Missdavinalee are due to play at The Trinity Bar in Station Road, Harrow, tonight, Thursday January 8.

Currently working on their single Moustacheless Man with animators, the group aims to have the single and a DVD out for the public by next month.

Though Davina is seriously driven in her career, she is determined to make each gig as fun as it can be.

She said: "The shows are all about having fun. We have had gigs where we give out presents and toys, and sweets to the crowd."

With emerging groups like the Ting Tings, Alpha Beat and Hot Chips introducing electro pop to the tastes of mainstream society, Missdavinalee are set to create waves amongst their growing fans.
