Monthly music night Radar is returning to showcase the best up-and-coming artists at West London venue Under the Bridge.

Organiser of the event Mark Sutherland brings the latest batch of exciting acts to the venue on Thursday June 29.

This month sees The Age of L.U.N.A, Adam Naas , Misunderstood, Catherine McGrath, Superglu, Autumn Sharif and Vianni perform.

Once again Radar brings forth an eclectic mix of genres with the soulful Adam Naas, old school hip hop collective The Age of L.U.N.A. and country singer Catherine McGrath.

Previously the night has showcased acts including BBC Introducing winner Izzy Bizu, acclaimed rapper Ghetts, chart hitters WSTRN and singer-songwriter JP Cooper to name a few.

All of the above went on to sign with major labels so those performing at the latest Radar are ones to keep an eye on over the next few years. This could be your last chance to see them in such an intimate setting as they head for bigger stages.

As Ed Sheeran closed Glastonbury Festival last weekend with just himself and his guitar, it highlights the importance of supporting unsigned, struggling acts more than ever as they could one day follow suit.

We spoke to Mark Sutherland, organiser of Radar about its beginnings and what it's become.

You've been working on Radar since the beginning, how and why did it first come to be?

I set Radar up having been approached by Music Week to set up a showcase for them, having spent over 25 years running events for media companies and worked previously at publishers Emap PLC (Now Bauer Media) and BBC.

As well as my own company MusicConnex I am also a board Director for ILUVLIVE who seemed a natural partner for this event as one of the UK's longest running and most successful showcase organisations funded by The Arts Council and who have been key in the early support of artists like Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Izzy Bizu, Tinie Tempah.

The idea was to set up the definitive industry showcase unlike any other event, all artists are invited we very rarely take unsolicited approaches. Artists have to have reached a significant level of traction and ready to present themselves to the industry.

Artists are sometimes recently signed, on the verge of getting signed or increasingly wishing to remain running their own affairs but need that all important industry profile.

Is it important for you to get a real mix of genres?

Yes because we aim to be the definitive industry showcase so it is important we cover every type of popular music genre.

We have also built a reputation for providing a diverse range of talent that always has surprises so making an entertaining evening introducing people to different musical talent they may not normally experience.

Have you seen artists who've played the event go on to greater success?

Yes in our short time we have seen 14 artists get a major deal either with a Label or Publisher. Artists who have taken part include Izzy Bizu, Ghetts, JP Cooper, WSTRN, Tiggs Da Author, The Lottery Winners and The Carnaby's.

Do you think there should be more events like this in the UK to support up-and-coming & unsigned artists?

There are already lots that support emerging artists, most focus on those just starting out we are one of the few that are focused on artists who, we believe, are on the verge of breaking in the next 18 months or so.

What advice would you have for anyone wanting to start this sort of event or artists who want to play?

I would encourage people to start events supporting emerging artists as everyone has to start somewhere and these artists need as many opportunities as possible to build a fan base and hone their craft.

I would advise artists to do as many live performances as possible to increase their profile, build their fan base and perfect their live show.
