Ealing Jazz Festival's 30th anniversary will be taking place this summer in leafy Walpole Park.

The festival, which launched in August 1985, will be coming to Ealing from Wednesday (July 29) to Sunday August 2.

Festival co-founder and artistic director Dick Esmond said: "The festival kicks off on Wednesday at 7.30pm with two bands; Ken McCarthy quintet and Vasilis Xenopoulos Standard Time Quintet, which will be a positive and exciting start to the festival.

"My own band, Sound of 17 Big Band, will be wrapping things up on Sunday."

Thousands of local jazz fans came to last year's festival, with more and more enjoying the event every year.

There will be performances in a range of jazz styles, including: mainstream jazz, modern, bebop, post bebop and hard bebop, and both old and new bands will play.

There will be a variety of big bands and smaller duets, so you can bring your dancing shoes, or just relax on the grass.

This year, there will also be a tribute to the festival's co-founder Bev Bowles-Bevan, who sadly passed away this year at the age of 89. The tribute will be in the form of a special piano bar with words written by Esmond and a photograph.

Thousands enjoyed last year's event

Esmond said: "We have some first-class Ealing musicians. A big strength of the festival is that all of the bands are headed up by Ealing musicians, nearly all of whom still live in the borough.

"It's a real home-spun event, and all of the people involved are as proud as can be to play on their home turf.

"The best part of the festival is the communication between the bands and the audience; it's been dubbed 'the friendly festival', as there's a great togetherness.

"Many people have turned up after all these years since 1985, and we still attract new young people. They find it's the sort of music they can take to. It's actually a perfect show!"

Tickets cost £4 per person, per day on July 29 and 30, and £5 per person, per day from July 31-August 2. Weekend tickets per person for August 1 and 2 are £8. Children aged 12 and under are free. Tickets are available at the gates.

Esmond said: "All of the musicians involved are immensely proud at reaching the festival's 30th anniversary.

"You can't beat playing in your home turf."
