Anyone else spotted the trend yet? Has it caught on across the country? Or across west London?
There seems to be a somewhat tidal surge in the number of classic pubs and traditional restaurants deliberately falling somewhere between the two.
I guess maybe you'd call them gastro pubs, but personally I haven't got the remotest hint of what that actually means.
Anyway, Ruislip Lido now has its very own 'survival of the fittest' style pub adapted to the modern consumer who apparently cannot decide which they'd prefer – pub, or pizza – and so are more inclined not to choose either.
The recently remodelled, revamped, renamed, and recarveried Water's Edge – formerly a Crown Carvery - in Reservoir Road is exemplary of this food-boozer trend.
Offering a bit of a split-personality menu of freshly made-before-your-eyes pizza and dish-up-yourself carvery, Water's Edge definitely doesn't offer the high-end cuisine experience its fancy new name might conjure.
But that doesn't make it a write-off at the first speedbump – the stacked out bar goes some way to holding the restaurants head above critical water.
The pizza menu has pretty impressive variety and the sweet chilli chicken option I leaned towards falls amongst the better pizzas I've had, and soared above the Sunday hangover corner takeaway pizza to which I'm most accustomed.
Vegetarian options weren't exactly growing on trees on the Water's Edge menu (ironically), nor were the non-pizza, non-carvery dishes.
But as long as you're not a foodie, and are looking to make more of a night of it, Water's Edge offers a more lively, laid back atmosphere to your purpose built restaurant.
The pub vibe seeps through with plenty of sports wielding flat screen TVs and even a pool table (invaded by some overly boistrous youths during my excursion).
And while the pitch black February evening didn't lend itself to a vast horizon across Ruislip Lido, the location right at the water's edge – surprised? - will make this a prime spot for al fresco food and beer when the nights grace us by getting shorter.
Water's Edge will not be your hyper-gourmet joint that books up months in advance, nor will it overrun by wine-stumbling teens on their way to central, but if you're looking for decent food in a chilled out place with a nice view, this is your place – and lets be honest, it beats another 'Spoons burger.
