ARTISTS who did not pick up a paintbrush until later in life are staging an exhibition in Ealing.

The group, which has been receiving expert tuition at drawing and painting classes at St Andrews Church Centre, has produced vibrant works in oil paint, watercolour and pastel.

Tutor Roy Matthews, who was educated at prestigious Goldsmiths School of Art in London and has been an art lecturer for over 30 years, said it was very rewarding to teach people new to art.

He said: “I've taught people of all levels – sometimes it's a case of having to show people which end of a pencil is which, but once they start the lessons they soon develop and produce some wonderful work.

“I show them all the basics of drawing - it's not a secret system that only professional artists understand, if you understand the techniques you can produce very accurate work. The pictures in this year's exhibition show just what can be achieved.”

Mr Matthews said many of his students did not join up until they retired and have been surprised by their progress. He added:“Over a period of time all my students have turned into competent artists.”

“Although many of the people in my classes are retired I do teach younger people – one pupil is 16-years-old and has made tremendous progress since she started the classes when she was just 13.”
