THE sights and sounds of Africa will form a unique piece of music by the Ealing Choral Society tomorrow (Saturday).
It is the African Sanctus, an unorthodox setting of the Latin Mass, integrated with authentic, traditional African music recorded by the composer David Fanshawe on his legendary sojourns up the river Nile through Egypt, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. The Sanctus journey, from the Mediterranean to Lake Victoria and from the mountains of West Sudan to the Red Sea, became the framework for the composition.
Armed with a rucksack and a tape recorder, David Fanshawe recorded music from well over 50 tribes. David will be present at the concert and will give an introductory talk about the piece and his experiences in Africa. Another delight with be Tiernan Sheehan, a 12-year-old pupil at St Benedict's School, Ealing, singing a treble solo. Tiernan is an Abbot scholar in Ealing Abbey Choir, which he joined at the age of eight. He has since sung at Westminster Cathedral and toured with the Abbey Choir to Milan, Switzerland and Rome.
