Rather than hitting the road, Roman and Maru decide to camp out on the roof of his corrupt father's villa, from where they spy on their anguished (and sometimes not so anguished) parents.

Produced by Gabriel Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, the stars of hit road movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, the tragic tale is suffused with cool.

But, despite superb performances from young leads Juan Pablo de Santiago and Maria Deschamps, Roman and Maru's antics soon grow tedious and the film appears too convinced by its own edginess.

What begins as a sweet and occasionally funny romance, with echoes of a darker Harold and Maude, fails to pull off a change in tone and the ending left me feeling flat.
