A Harrow sixth former has excelled in long-running Channel 4 programme Countdown.

Rhys Benjamin, a pupil at John Lyon School in Harrow, proved his maths and literacy skills against the Countdown clock, to get a spot on the show.

Rhys has already beaten one longstanding winner on the show and is set to return to our screens on Monday (June 22) for his second contest.

Countdown is filmed in Salford, so Rhys has had to fit the filming schedule in and around his revision timetable for his AS exams.

Rhys said: “I am delighted to represent the John Lyon School on a national television show, I've thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the programme and testing my mental agility against some Countdown veterans.

"I am sure that this will stand me in good stead for my university interviews next year!”

Countdown is a popular daytime quiz show which sees contestants go head-to-head in words and numbers games.

Each day, two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.

It was the first show to appear on Channel 4, in 1982, and has been a cult show ever since.
