Get your little monkey into the swing of reading at a free book event in Brentford.

To mark National Bookstart Week, charity Book Trust has teamed up with Boston Manor House, which will open its doors to families in the borough for an afternoon of jungle-themed stories, songs and rhymes.

Parents can bring along a soft jungle animal toy to the event on Saturday June 27 from 2pm-4pm.

Councillor Ed Mayne, Hounslow Council's cabinet member for public health and leisure, said: “We all know that reading is one of the most important skills children – or anyone – must master to succeed in school or in life.

"So we’re delighted to support this free, Bookstart event and to encourage people to get into the habit of reading regularly.”

This year's theme is based on Giles Andreae’s beloved picture book Rumble in the Jungle, which will be given away to families.

National Bookstart Week is an annual celebration of Book Trust's leading reading programme Bookstart, held between June 8 and June 14.

It is aimed at reinforcing the importance for families to get into the habit of reading daily, for at least 10 minutes.

Throughout June thousands of free events will be held around the country for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and their families at libraries, children centres, nurseries and bookshops.

Diana Gerald, chief executive of Book Trust, said: "As a mum, I treasure those wonderful shared moments reading with my child. You are doing something special, and for a few minutes the outside world stops while you read about elephants or pirates.

"Research has shown that reading to young children every day makes a huge difference in terms of their future confidence, communication skills, well-being and educational attainment."
