A friend whose greyhound has just been treated for a broken foot told me of their difficulty in getting her home after the treatment.

She carefully lifted her in and out of the car so she didn’t have to put pressure on her poorly foot only to find that, as soon as they arrived home, the dog managed to haul herself onto the comfiest armchair and sit there expectantly waiting for room service.

Chester, a four year old Great Dane and Bullmastiff Cross also looks as though he’s sitting pretty comfortably too, but he deserves to be as he’s had a difficult few months.

Chester was found in February abandoned and emaciated on the streets of Brent.

He was taken to The Mayhew Animal Home where the vet team initially thought he was reasonably healthy.

However he soon developed a high temperature and stopped eating. Concerned about what was wrong, The Mayhew opened him up to have a look.

A big, strong lad

Chester was found in February abandoned and emaciated on the streets of Brent

They found he had an infected prostate and that his insides were inflamed. Poor Chester was cleaned up and although The Mayhew thought they may have to operate again, this was not necessary and he recovered well.

He does, however, have colitis which can be controlled with a special diet with bran mixed into it. The Mayhew can help his future owner with some of these costs.

Chester’s a strong lad who weighs 50kg so his new owner must be able to handle him. Great Danes often vie for the title of tallest dog so he’s not for the faint-hearted.

He’s friendly and loves to snuggle in close for love and attention. He can sometimes be overly assertive with large male dogs.

Chester is not happy in kennels so until The Mayhew find the right permanent home for him, they would like to find him a foster home. If you’re interested in adopting or fostering Chester, call 020 8962 8000 or see themayhew.org.
