Peter Kay has cancelled his first tour in eight years due to "unforeseen family circumstances".

He was originally due to perform 17 dates at the O2 Arena alone, kicking off next September.

But now the entire 100-date UK arena tour which was scheduled to take place in 2018 and 2019 is cancelled.

At 12pm on Wednesday (December 13) he released a statement on social media saying: "Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.

"This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life Shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

"My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I'm sure you'll understand my family must always come first.

"I've always endeavoured to protect my family's privacy from the media. I hope the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again, I'm very sorry."

It further reads that customers who purchased tickets for the live arena tour and Dance for Life tour can receive refunds from their original point of purchase, which includes AXS.com and Ticketmaster .

However those who purchased Dance for Life tickets can still donate the money to Cancer Research UK by visiting www.cancerresearchuk.org .
