A South Korean artist has taken inspiration for her exhibition from her new home in London.

Jandi Kim, 30, moved to Dalston two years ago and was moved to recreate the grim surroundings for her exhibition There Is No Home at Dollis Hill's The Stables Gallery later this month.

Jandi tells the Harrow Observer: "It's about places we want to go back to but can't, like the womb."

Many of the photos have been retouched so they have no visible means of entry or exit.

She adds: "Most of the places are around east London where I live, which is a bit dreary.

"These are real buildings that I have seen and there is a long history of poverty in the area.

"But I wouldn't want people to think there was no optimism there. There are things that are sinister but beautfiul at the same time."

Four of the 15 pieces in the exhibition are photographs that have been re-touched with paint, the remaining 11 are displayed as she left them.

The gallery's manager Christopher Channing, says: "The artist produces nostalgic paintings of dwellings, inviting the viewer to enter and reflecting on the instinct of the home, while also due to the removed entrances, subtly indicating concealment and closure denying coexistence".

* The exhibition runs from September 18 until October 12, Thursdays to Sundays between 11am and 5pm.
