IAN PROCTOR speaks to artist Ruma Nowaz about Transitions, her solo exhibition at The Stables Gallery

ABSTRACT oil paintings, collages and photographs can be seen at a new solo exhibition by artist Ruma Nowaz called Transitions.

Her colourful works can be viewed at Dollis Hill's The Stables Gallery and Arts Centre until the end of the month.

Ms Nowaz graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in fine art in 2006, and is now based at the Chocolate Factory, a complex of studios in Wood Green, north London, near where she lives.

After being approached to exhibit, Ms Nowaz - a planning officer for Haringey Council by day - made landscape sketches of Gladstone Park in which the gallery sits, in order to produce several pictures especially for her display.

She said: "My work comprises mainly of abstract oil paintings, watercolours, collages and photographs.

"The main inspiration for my work is nature, landscape and our interaction and response to it.

"Having an Indian background and living in London, there is a strong urge to be immersed in the vibrations and colours of nature, in its myriad forms, and its influence on the urban environment.

"I have drawn inspiration from journeys through a variety of landscapes, including the Thames in London, Italy and Sicily and China.

"The Chinese landscape and civilisation has exerted a great influence, particularly the Yangtze River and Yellow Mountains.

"The unusual shape, size and formation of the yellow mountains create a haunting natural beauty, which become etched into the imagination." * Ruma's exhibition can be seen at The Stables Gallery and Arts Centre, Dollis Hill Lane, Dollis Hill between 11am and 5pm every Thursday to Sunday.
