This June, Theatre in the Square (created by the Lyric Theatre) is producing free theatre for passers-by in Hammersmith for its fifth year running.

The programme of shows invites passers-by to enjoy theatre for free in Lyric Square, and will be running from Tuesday (June 9) to Wednesday June 24.

The June programme includes the following shows: Boy Meets Girl, Monotone Man and Citizen Squid, which will all be performed outdoors - no matter what the weather has in store!

This week's installment is wacky, colourful play Monotone Man by The Human Zoo Theatre Company, which will be in the Lyric Square on Tuesday (June 16) and Wednesday (June 17).

Monotone Man follows the story of a man who lives in a monochrome life, stuck in a routine of black and white as he commutes through London, alone, shutting off from the world and forgetting those around him… Until suddenly his routine is broken, and he enters a wacky world of colour, excitement and even trampolines!

Artistic director of Monotone Man, Florence O'Mahony, said: "It shows the little moments of connection and kindness... The show starts in black and white, but gradually changes into colour; it's ridiculous by the end, almost like a children's birthday party!

"There's music through the whole play, that was specially composed.

"There's no script... You don't need to know any English to understand it. It's not children's theatre but it's suitable for everyone, anyone can enjoy it. It's very silly though!"

The play represents the fact that we are often in close proximity with a large group of people, but shut them off with headphones, and don't interact... Monotone Man is sure to have a big impact in commuter-heavy London!

The show includes seven actors; Nick Gilbert, Rosalind Hoy, Fleur Spitzner, Florence O'Mahony, Liberty Bliss, Folarin Akinmade and Hedley Roach.

A blog entry about the show's rehearsals on their website said: "Today saw us channel our inner Fred Astaire's (and Mary Poppins') for some fantastic umbrella based movement sequences. Not only that, but we worked our way through all but one of the pivotal moments in each characters journey...

"We brought out the helium balloons (which are surprisingly difficult to hold on to, by the way) and choreographed the most beautifully tragic balloon dance you could ever hope to see."

Florence said: "It's ridiculous, really fun, very colourful and high energy. We want to lift people's spirits, and break the monotony of their day."
