James Tarkowski should be placed on gardening leave for the remaining 18 months of his contract after his refusal to play for Brentford against Burnley, unless the club receive their valuation.

The 23-year-old's unprofessional actions betrayed the club's hierarchy, his team-mates and the Bees' supporters.

Brentford turned down a package worth £6million from Fulham in the summer and it is understood the Clarets' bids have been nowhere near that value.

Dean Smith will sit down with the club's hierarchy and decide the best way forward for the club before speaking to the defender again.

But after Tarkowski's actions, in my opinion, there is no way back for the 23-year-old at Griffin Park.

How can he rock up at the club's Jersey Road training ground and look his team-mates in the eye after turning his back on them?

He may be a good defender but his character completely goes against what the club have tried to bring in. He may have been badly advised but you can take it or leave it.

Some have claimed he just didn't want to face the side interested in him. That's not an excuse in my book. You can't pick and choose your games for those reasons.

Whether this forces a move or not, he'll now be considered amongst the likes of Martin Rowlands and Paul Brooker by the Griffin Park faithful.

I think Burnley have been cheeky with the way they have conducted themselves during the transfer window by putting derisory offers in for Brentford's players. Andre Gray moved to Burnley on the eve of the reverse fixture but the Clarets had met his valuation so it's a different scenario.

Guarded: Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche was guarded when I asked him how he would feel if a player had done that at one of his clubs, saying it hadn't happened.

But if I were him or Burnley Football Club, I would withdraw my interest in Tarkowski immediately. I would have little time for someone who will down tools if they don't get their way.

The Lancashire side are keen on signing Alan Judge and had a bid rejected for him in the build-up to the game.

The Irishman, however, showed what a professional does when subject to interest and play his heart out, which he does week in week out.

If I were Burnley, I would shift the money from Tarkowski and up the bid for Judge as he showed, once again, why he's invaluable to Dean Smith's side.

Sign him up: Harlee Dean

So, where does this leave Brentford? Tarkowski has bailed out and Harlee Dean is seemingly departing at the end of the season after his contract expires.

For me, the club have to return to the negotiating table with Dean as, to lose the two central defenders from the last 18 months at once, is not acceptable.

It is baffling to me that the club value Tarkowski so highly, yet are content to see Dean see out the remaining few months of his contract and leave for nothing.

In my opinion, Dean has been the superior defender this season and, while he has made mistakes, there is no doubt that he gives his all for the club, which is more that can now be said for his defensive partner.

The last 24 hours have been a sorry tale for Brentford Football Club thanks to one man's selfishness. Time will tell how long it takes for it to be resolved.
