Hi Sam, what have you been up to during the off-season?

I’ve just come back from a chilled holiday and I feel very relaxed after a busy rugby season. At school you get six weeks to have fun with your friends, but rugby players only get four to five weeks a year to enjoy ourselves away from the pitch. I like to spend this time relaxing on the beach, so I went to Bali in Indonesia.

Sounds lovely, are you excited to start the new rugby season?

I’m very excited. Rugby is a big part of my life and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch. It will also be really exciting to attend some of the CoacHclasses this year and meet all the young players.

Have you always wanted to play rugby?

I actually stopped playing rugby when I was seven because I wanted to play football instead. When I was 11, I went to Aylesbury Grammar School where they didn’t play football. Instead we played rugby, but I really enjoyed it and I’ve played ever since.

How did you become part of the London Wasps team?

I went to the CoacHclasses when I was younger as I wanted to learn more about the skills and tactics of the game. In year 7, my rugby teacher put me forward for the Wasps Junior Academy. I trained with them twice a week until I became an official London Wasps player when I was 18.

What’s the best thing about being a CoacHclass ambassador?

I really enjoyed attending the CoacHclasses when I was younger as it was a great place to make new friends and learn rugby skills from Wasps coaches. Now I get to share my skills with young players and help them discover more about the game, which I really enjoy. It’s really exciting to be the ambassador for the CoacHclasses and meet players who are passionate about rugby.

BRITA is the headline sponsor of the London Wasps Community Foundation, which runs rugby CoacHclasses for children. Sam is the London Wasps CoacHclass Ambassador and plays for Wasps in the back row.
