Richmond 71 Old Albanians 7

Richmond finally got their hands on the London League One title on Saturday - but in quite bizarre circumstances.

Having won the league three weeks ago, Richmond had the small matter of a final home game against Old Albanians before parading the trophy, or shield in this case, to their fans.

And perhaps the formalities were too small a matter as, with the visitors having taken to the pitch, referee Craig Smith lost patience waiting for the hosts and started the game without them.

Applying the letter of the law, he blew his whistle and awarded Old Albanians a penalty, from which they scored a converted try.

So when Richmond finally ran out, they were already 7-0 down. But that only served to spur on the champs.

Francois van Shalkwyk helped himself to four tries to finish the season with 22, while Kenny Bingham and Neil Piggott grabbed two each.

Tom Drewe got in on the act too, while Matt Brown marked his 100th appearance for the club with a try.

Skipper Matt Hart converted nine of the 10 tries, plus a penalty, with a near-faultless kicking display as Richmond ran out 71-7 winners.
