A quartet of Harlequins stars were among disappointed England Saxons players after they were beaten by Ireland Wolfhounds at Kingsholm on Saturday.

Matt Hopper, Charlie Matthews, Luke Wallace and David Ward were part of an inexperienced Saxons line-up which dominated large periods of possession, but could not turn that into points on the board against more savvy opponents as they went down 14-8.

Hopper, Matthews and Wallace were all part of the starting XV for the clash, the latter pair making their first starts at this level, while Ward came off the bench to mark his debut in this sort of company.

England’s points came courtesy of a try from Bath winger Anthony Watson, while Gloucester’s Freddie Burns kicked a second-half penalty.
