Herts/Middlesex Three: St Nicholas Old Boys 19 Quintin 14
Prop Ben Prescott led the way with a brace of tries as St Nicholas Old Boys made it two wins out of two in the league with victory over a strong Quintin team.
SNOBs lost a number of first XV players from last week's 17-5 defeat of London French to the Help For Heroes fixture at Twickenham, but they showed admirable strength in depth on a hot afternoon at Oak Avenue, Ickenham.
Prescott powered over for an early score that was converted by scrum half Stuart Evans and they extended the lead when South African winger Rolan Tissink cut a superb angle from the breakdown to crash through the Quintin defence and score under the posts.
Evans added his second conversion to give the hosts an early 14-0 lead before Quintin hit back strongly and their solid scrum and line-out gave their back division good possession with which to put pressure on the SNOBs defence.
SNOBs held out until half-time with some committed tackling from centre combination Pete Harris and Steve Preston but they finally cracked on the resumption, conceding a converted try following a well-executed backs move.
Home winger Dave Howard thought he had claimed a superb individual try until he was called back for a putting foot in touch yet SNOBs built on that momentum and Prescott crossed for his second try from the resulting line-out.
He was only denied his hat-trick minutes later by a superb tackle from the Quintin hooker but SNOBs had already done enough to join Hackney at the top of the division with two wins out of two.
SNOBs hope to make it three out of three away to Cuffley on Saturday, October 4.
