Harlequins 11-10 Wasps

Just a single point was all that separated London rivals Harlequins and Wasps at The Twickenham Stoop this afternoon.

Back in September, Quins opened their season with a 16-15 win over Wasps over the road at HQ, after Andy Goode missed a last minute conversion.

In that game, Wasps almost snatched a win with their last gasp try, but on this occasion, it was a try three minutes from time by Sam Smith which saw Quins come from behind to turn imminent defeat into victory.

To rub salt into the wounds for Wasps, Smith's father, former England wing Simon Smith, played for four years with the club in the 1980s.

Joe Carlisle and Nick Evans swapped early penalties before a converted penalty try,  awarded when the hosts pulled down a powerful scrum a yard from the line, gave Wasps a 10-3 lead.

Things got worse for Quins when they lost fly half Evans to injury soon after to be replaced by Ben Botica, who sliced his first penalty attempt wide, although his next effort saw Quins reduce the deficit to four points.

A spell of pressured on the Wasps line in the dying minutes then paid off when Quins took the lead for the first time as the ball was worked out wide to Smith, who touched down despite the best efforts of James Short to stop him.

Although Botica missed the resulting conversion, it did not matter as Wasps did not have enough time to get back into it.
