Bristol Rugby 82-28 Ealing Trailfinders

Ealing Trailfinders suffered a horrible mauling at the hands of rampaging league leaders Bristol, but at least had the consolation of claiming what may prove to be a vital bonus point.

The later stages of the match resembled a game of sevens rugby as the west Londoners, down to 13 men after picking up two yellow cards, were breached easily time and again.

In all, they shipped 12 tries and although they scored four themselves, they were seriously outclassed.

It speaks volumes for their sense of purpose that they kept at it in search of a point that inches them closer to Jersey in the relegation race. There are eight points between the sides with three to play.

It did not take Bristol too long to put Ealing in their place. They were a converted try to the good after only two minutes and passing up three certain points in pursuit of another try.

It would have been easier for Bristol fly-half Adrian Jarvis to pop a penalty over the posts from bang in front, 10 yards out. Instead, he opted for a far trickier kick for touch to set up an attacking line-out.

Their naked ambition came to nothing on that occasion but it told Trailfinders the hosts were not expecting too much resistance from the team at the bottom of the Championship.

In the very first attack, full-back Jack Wallace pierced a flimsy rearguard to glide in under the posts and it needed some sterling defending to keep out a couple of driving mauls from Bristol forwards following attacking lineouts.

Scrum half Luke Baldwin eventually found the try-line after 24 minutes following some great support play and offloading in a break from half way that was kept alive by some fine handling.

The pressure was relentless. The penalty count one sided. And on the half hour, centre Bryan Rennie scampered over the lane from close range to put the result already beyond doubt.

There was brief respite from the one-way traffic when Gavin Curry, Adam Preocanin and Andrew Henderson broke forward with menace, switching possession well.

But very soon, Bristol were back on the attack to claim their bonus point try through Wallace, following a yellow card for skipper Mat Evans just before the break. Jarvis' kick made it 28-0.

A spirited start to the second half from Trailfinders brought deserved reward when Andrew Henderson was on hand to power over from close range after good work from Ronnie McLean.

It was never going to herald a power shift and Bristol's ability to attack from all angles and support ball carriers in numbers led to their fifth try – winger Charlie Amesbury on the end of a flowing move down the line.

But there was more joy for Ealing when Henderson claimed his second try of the afternoon after getting lucky with the bounce following a chip ahead from Ben Ward.

Jack Tovey went over for Bristol moments later as the points kept coming and even if the contest was dead and buried, it continued to entertain.

Second row Iain Grieve humbled a tiring Ealing rearguard with a show of force to run in from near half way – the result of some strong-arm hand-offs and feeble challenges.

Far from deflated, Ealing kept their chins up and sub Richard Townsend lunged over for the 10th try of the game – and the visitors' third - to keep them in the hunt for that extra point.

But the last minutes were destined to be punishing, with two players – Henderson and Steve Neville - sin-binned in quick succession.

Amesbury scored his second to take Bristol past 50 points and subs George Watkins and Ollie Hayes broke through non-existent tackling to make it 10 tries for the hosts before Amesbury rubbed more salt in the wound with his third touchdown of the afternoon.

Another sub, Mitch Eadie, compounded the agony, but at least there was a last word from Ealing when Tom Parker managed to dot the ball down in the final attack to give the visiting fans something to cheer before heading home.
