LONDON THREE NORTH WEST

Old Merchant Taylors’ 52

Welwyn 7

Old Merchant Taylors’ sent out a message to the rest of London Three North West with an emphatic victory over Welwyn on Saturday.

Taylors’, who have won successive promotions in the past two seasons, took the game to the second-placed side and ran out comfortable 52-7 winners to move up to fourth in the table.

It has been a quiet start to the season for OMTs, but last week’s 22-13 win over Datchworth showed things were starting to click after losses to Wasps and Fullerians.

Saturday’s win over Welwyn was when everything finally fell into place as the home side put on a real display in front of their own fans to kick-start their campaign.

It was one-way traffic from the outset with Welwyn being pinned in their own half for the entire first half, conceding 26 points without return.

The conditions suited OMTs’ fast and powerful back-line, tries being scored by Joe White, Joe Isaacs on the left wing and James Gregory on the right.

Welwyn, who came into the clash in terrific form, responded after the interval, but Taylors remained resolute, led by Tom Kenison, and conceded only once.

Nick Adey ran over for the hosts to put the hosts back on the front foot before Gregory proceeded to get his hat-trick.

Mika Waqa, having played 60 minutes at loose-head prop, was given his opportunity to show his carrying skills when he moved forward to score an excellent try.

Pete Sinderberry completed the scoring, but it was substitute Brian Bernardez who caught the eye after coming off the bench to help seal the 52-7 triumph.

This Saturday sees Taylors’ host Beccles RFC at home in the first round of the RFU Senior Vase.

OMTs are inviting new players to try out for the club. For more details visit www.omtrugby.co.uk. Training is every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm.
