HAYES and Yeading's brave resistance against title-chasers Fleetwood came to nothing as they were eventually beaten with 10 men tonight.

Defeat was cruel on Nas Bashir's men as they held their opponents for 75 minutes, before being put in their place by Micky Mellon's men in a finale that saw Hayes and Yeading goalkeeper James Beasant red-carded.

After securing victories from their marathon trips to Yeovil Town and Newport County, Fleetwood rounded off a perfect week on the road by joining Wrexham at the top of the Blue Square Premier.

But Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, who was on a spying mission in Woking ahead of next month's FA Cup third round tie against Fleetwood, may have been lulled into a false sense of security as Hayes and Yeading gave Micky Mellon's men a torrid time in the first-half.

The hosts produced a great response after going behind to a 15 th minute Keith Briggs strike with influential midfielder Jamie Hand returning after his Luton Town loan spell and the pace of Tom Collins (pictured) and Pierre Joseph-Dubois causing problems up front.

The visitors had the first real chance of the match in the 10 th minute when Gareth Seddon sprung the offside trap and powered through on goal, but Beasant got down low to save well.

However, there was no reprieve for Hayes and Yeading in the 15 th minute when the hosts only half cleared a Shaun Beeley cross and Briggs curled home beautifully from 20 yards out.

At this stage, Fleetwood were rampant and it appeared to be a case of how many for the Cod Army.

But the hosts should have been level midway through the first-half when Toby Ajala's cross picked out an unmarked Curtis Ujah at the back post, but he headed wide from close range.

The hosts drew encouragement from that positive sign and they grabbed the equaliser in the 36 th minute when a clever flick from Joseph-Dubois put Collins through and he produced a superb angled finish past Fleetwood goalkeeper Scott Davies.

It could have been even better at the break for Hayes and Yeading with first Joseph-Dubois having a shot deflected wide after good work from Ajala and then Louis Soares firing over from close range.

The visitors started the second-half in determined mood to restore their advantage and Andy Mangan fired just wide from 25 yards.

Fleetwood sent on Jamie Vardy as a second-half substitute for Peter Till and he came close to putting the visitors back in front, but his clever lob was just over the crossbar.

However, Hayes and Yeading stuck to the task admirably and they came close to snatching the lead with 18 minutes to play when Ajala struck a rasping 25-yard volley that was just over.

The hosts paid the price for failing to defend a simple long throw-in from Beeley 15 minutes from time when substitute Magno Vieira pounced to hook a shot into the far corner.

And it was all over eight minutes from the end when Beasant was red-carded for bringing down Vardy in the area and Mangan made no mistake from 12 yards.

Hayes and Yeading: Beasant, Hand, Cadmore, Soares, Joseph-Dubois (Preddie), Wishart, Lee (Crockford), Folkes, Ujah, Ajala, Collins.
