Ickenham’s Marc McCarroll and Jordanne Whiley and Eastcote’s Andy Lapthorne are all set to make their latest international appearances for Great Britain after being selected by the Tennis Foundation for the 2014 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Alphen, the Netherlands from May 26 until June 1.

The trio of London 2012 Paralympians are among the Great Britain players selected for the men’s, women’s and quad events respectively in Alphen, with British No. 2 McCarroll again joining Scot Gordon Reid and Nottinghamshire’s David Phillipson to spearhead Britain’s bid for a medal in the men’s World Group, in the top tier of 12 nations. The trio are joined for this year’s event by Lincolnshire’s Ed Holt.

“It’s always exciting to represent my country and after fourth place in 2009 and two fifth places in the last two years in the men’s World Group we’re definitely hoping to be challenging for the medals again this year,” said McCarroll, who has earned his career best world No. 12 singles ranking this season and won his latest title earlier this month in the men’s doubles at the Atlanta Open.

At the Atlanta Open Whiley also retained her women’s singles and doubles titles and the British No. 1 and world No. 5 once again joins Hampshire’s Lucy Shuker and Wiltshire’s Louise Hunt to form the trio of players that have won the silver medal for Great Britain in the women’s World Group twice since 2009, including in Turkey last May.

“We’ve got a nice collection of World Team Cup silver and bronze medals between us and I’ve got a World Team Cup gold medal from my days as a junior, but hopefully we can get to the final again and challenge for the Women’s title this year and make some history,” said Whiley, who partnered Shuker to win the women’s doubles bronze medal at London 2012. “We know it’s going to be tough, especially with the Netherlands bidding to retain their women’s title on home soil, but each of us has been playing well this season and we will be doing our best to upset the odds this time.”

Lapthorne already has a World Team Cup gold medal, having been a member of the Great Britain team that won the quad title in Nottingham in 2009. Lapthorne, Liverpool’s Jamie Burdekin and Macclesfield’s Antony Cotterill all have current world top 10 rankings as they head to Alphen while Lapthorne and Burdekin both have recent victories over world No. 1 David Wagner, who will once again lead the USA, the defending champions in the quad event. Lapthorne also partnered Cotterill to reach their first Super Series doubles final together recently in South Africa.

“We know what it takes to win the World Team Cup title and we have all had some great results this season, so although it’s going to be tough hopefully we can translate our form from the tour this year into another big performance next week,” said Lapthorne.

The men’s, women’s and quad events at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup will all begin with a series of round-robin pool ties before the leading teams go forward to contest the knockout phase of the competition later in the week.
